Akber,
Your point 1 is gross oversimplification. I'm no fan of Bhutto--I am against
every politician propped up by the civil-military establishment--but I don't
agree with you completely on your point 1. For example, your point about Bhutto
being civilian MLA. What choice did he have? Was there a constitution in place?
He also took up the post of the President but was there a document detailing
what were the authorities of the President of the state were? Martial Law was
the only law in effect with any authority. But does that mean that I think that
Bhutto was a democrat? Absolutely not.
Similarly, your "proof" that Bhutto had influence over Yahya is a conjecture and
not a "proof". Different, more authentic and more beleivable, accounts exist (I
will look them up and send the reference to you later if yoi ask) that suggest
that it was some Generals who went to Yahya and told him that the Army's image
was in the dumpster and it was imprudent for Yahya to remain in power. These
Generals forced Yahya to transfer power to Bhutto who was the blue-eyed boy of
some top brass generals.
But all these can be discussed if some measure of objectivity is maintained
which I fail to see in this discussion and that is why I feel its a royal
wasteage of time to participate.
