She was indeed feeling very confident and invincible when she returned last October (which prompted me to write my article published on Countercurrents). I was wondering exactly what had she promised to deliver to USA?
She thought she had the whole world in her back pocket as Uncle Sam told Musharraf to drop all charges and let her take part in the election third time around. So she thought she had it made.
There are other very important political implications on how the US is going to react now towards Musharraf and Iran. It seems that the US has now lost interest in going after Iran and will concentrate to make the best of the losing proposition in Afghanistan-Pakistan arena. Most analysts think that the US did not have a plan B to deal with the kind of eventuality that has arisen after BBʼs death.
The letters written by her to influential people in the US which have been made public clearly show that she was eager to get into power at any cost to the future of the country. BB certainly displayed a preference for her own power over national interest or security. I see this assassination as a good omen for Pakistan. It has caught the US by surprise. My priority #1 is the security of Pakistan. Democracy can come when things are right for it.
Musharrafʼs job would have been easy if Pakistan was economically a self sufficient country. The US aid and debts kept Musharraf down and compliant to Washingtonʼs whims and wishes. The moment, Pakistan took stand against Talibans under American pressure after 9/11, the region became volatile and unstable. The powers like America, and Britain want to see the rest of the world unstable, if any thing, it keeps them strong and in the driverʼs seat. BB was ready to play the game for self serving purposes. The situation that changed on December 27 cannot cause any new problem for Pakistan that it did not have before but Washington is scrambling to recover from it. It serves them right.
