"CAN WE SAY GOODBYE TO GOD?"

OPENING ADDRESS

The interest in God and religion has once again been revived in recent years. The reasons for it are well known to most of us. It is not that the world has suddenly become God fearing or God loving, it is perhaps more a desire for recognition and finding a place and need for religion and spiritual belief in the development of the present human psyche. This, coupled with the fact that modern technological advancements have shrunk the world to the mode of a single global unit, as against a multinational entity that existed until quite recently, has jolted the somehow materially complacent multitude of humanity.

Events in any corner of the globe, now, have the tendency to affect every other parts of it quite instantaneously. The walls of the water tight compartments have all but come down, to expose each of us, to universal ideas. Some of these we like, but some threaten our fragile concepts of faith and belief. The resulting effect is insecurity and an unsettled feeling among believers and non believers alike. Each conservative group feels threatened and is fighting for its identity and values, which it had held unhampered for so long.

The globe itself is showing signs of instability under the unbridled pressure of the industrial onslaught. One sees and observes that many natural universal patterns, like weather cycles and other ecological balances, have started to show affects of our exploitative pursuits. All this is perhaps an outcome of change and evolution. As has been said elsewhere, we humans are a blend of mind, body and the soul, and can develop and evolve further, if we keep this uniquely human triad in balance. The physical body is primarily the animal manifestation of our existence, and will continue to exhibit its basic animal traits. It is the intellect which can be groomed and developed by ones conscious effort, based on knowledge and awareness. Intellect is also the means to the understanding of the mysteries of nature and of finding solace for the Soul. It is our inherent desire and ability to observe and discern that leads humans to question and enquire. And it is this act of enquiry and learning that is the most noble and prized activity of homo sapiens.

Well! The birth of an idea in the mind is just the beginning. Human effort then is to seek its verification, feasibility and justification, and this is how the process of discovery is born. This endless exercise continues, and one begins to realize that the more one knows the more there is to know. So let us embark on the journey of seeking, finding and learning what our illustrious speakers may have already found, and would like to share it with us today.
